Senior Motor Controls Engineer, Electric Propulsion Systems

This position will be responsible for the development and validation of motor control algorithms in a real-time embedded environment. 

 

Responsibilities include:

 

  • Develop and validate four-quadrant vector control-based motor control algorithms for brushless DC (surface mount and interior mounted permanent magnet), SR, AC induction or similar electric machines.
  • Utilize established motor dynamometers, hardware-in-the-loop, and vehicle testing to validate motor controls and motor control interfaces to vehicle controls.
  • Implement control strategies using development tools and real-time controls in a rapid prototyping/commercialization environment.
  • Develop algorithms to reduce vehicle-level noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH)
  • Develop repeatable methods for and provide motor characteristic data such as efficiency maps, torque production, thermal predictions, etc.
  • Develop and implement rigid motor optimization techniques, tools, and test and/or development procedures.
  • Develop and validate sensorless position sensing algorithms.

Qualifications:

    • Id x Iq-based vector control systems development
    • Matlab/Simulink environment, real-time motor control systems

Electrical Systems Engineer, Hybrid and Electric Propulsion Systems

For this position, BluWav is looking for an electrical engineer that has experience with the integration of electrical features and subsystems into a new or existing vehicle electrical architecture.

 

Responsibilities include:

 

  • Design electronics hardware and electrical interface documentation for electric propulsion systems
  • Work with customers and key internal and external suppliers to complete the following tasks:
    • Create and maintain electrical distribution system for test vehicles, simulators and testing systems
    • Create or specify I/O signal conditioning electronics for customer and internal vehicles, and development and validation facilities

Electrical Systems Technician

This position is responsible for the implementation of electrical and electronic system related deliverables, complete vehicle builds, and perform component testing using internal custom and external generic dynamometer facilities.


Responsibilities include:

 

  • Design circuits for test apparatus or circuit boards using ORCAD.
  • Complete circuit modifications of surface mount components down to 0204 SMDs and various quad flat pack IC packages
  • Build and implement electrical distribution systems (wiring) for vehicle level electric propulsion system prototype installations
  • Assist in the fabrication of high voltage energy storage systems
  • Coordinate and deliver prototype circuit board(s) with preferred supplier
  • Work with release analysts to ensure all release documentation reflects as-delivered components
  • Debug and improve test equipment installations and test fixtures
  • Coordinate laboratory and testing work tasks with other technicians and technical staff

Mechanical Engineer

Responsibilities include:

 

  • Perform packaging studies of new propulsion system into vehicles.
  • Perform some structural analysis of components ensuring design is robust for application.
  • Develop detailed CAD drawings of components to a level that they can be manufactured.
  • Design vehicle modifications to fit systems or Lead the design, analysis and test of electric and hybrid-electric propulsion systems, following disciplines outlined in Product Development Process (DFMEA, etc.)
  • Specify and select mechanical systems: Suspension components, brake systems, cooling systems, gear boxes, etc.

  • Evaluate suppliers and their products in order to optimize the performance and business value of the design when specifying components for a design concept. Coordinate the engineering logistics of hardware for the design assembly
  • Prepare internal standards, specifications and test procedures for product acceptance
  • Develop and evaluate design alternatives for continuous product improvement
  • Manage the prototype build and vehicle integration of the design concept.
  • Resolve mechanical and system issues and lead any troubleshooting efforts related to mechanical integration and in-vehicle system development and tuning

Vehicle Modeling Engineer

This position will be responsible for accurately modeling current and new system designs within Matlab’s software packages to quickly perform product and system specifications. Experience with automotive or aerospace system design and control theory is desired. Experience with electric drive system design and vehicle control strategy development is highly desired.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop accurate vehicle/system models within Matlab, Simulink and/or C++ environments including vehicle/system plants and vehicle/system controls.
  • Quantify the performance and efficiency of systems with different configurations and/or different components.
  • Identify operating scenarios in which vehicle/system performance may be unique as compared to other technologies.
  • Develop trade-off tools to aid in design selection and recommend new design avenues or modifications based on simulation results.

Mechanical (CAD) Designer

The position will be responsible for the design and packaging of integrated electric machine-based propulsion systems and related components.

Responsibilities include:

  • Design and package of electric machines and related components, test fixtures, and development equipment as well as electronics and energy storage systems
  • Generate system, subsystem, and component geometry / package space through the use of legacy and detail drawings
  • Create detailed drawings of systems and components for prototype and production manufacturing
  • Apply BluWāv Systems drafting standards, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, design guidelines, and release system to designs
  • Read/interpret blueprints and design for assembly, manufacturing, and service

Software Engineer - Hybrid and Electric Propulsion and Energy Storage Systems

For this position, BluWav is looking for an engineer that has expertise in software design, implementation of operating systems, and is demonstrably familiar with software release and version control systems. This is a hands-on position that requires a great amount of customer and peer interaction.

Responsibilities include:

  • Development and implementation of “C” and/or Simulink-based algorithms and controls for customer and internal applications up to and including:
    • HMI interface to vehicle, displays, and external systems
    • Powertrain-related functions such as torque control and management
    • Safety-related functions such as diagnostics, prognostics, and fault code generation
    • Vehicle dynamics functions such as 4 wheel slip regulation and traction control
    • Battery electric and series hybrid vehicle controls
  • Integration of “C” code for use in standalone modules or integrated as an “S” Function in overall Simulink software
  • Recommendation and implementation of software version control and release process and systems
  • Research, recommend, and Implement software operating systems on in-house embedded controllers
  • Unit test and validation of overall software solution in response to System Requirement Documentation

Mechanical Engineer -- Thermal Systems/FEA

The position will be responsible for the design and analysis of cooling systems and components, rotating mechanisms (e.g. motors, gear boxes, etc.), and structural systems and components.  For this position, BluWāv is looking for a highly-technical individual with a solid background in thermal analysis and engineering and experience in structural analysis and component design.  A highly-motivated candidate that brings experiences in vehicle systems and components that directly or indirectly relate to vehicle propulsion systems, (e.g. engine cooling systems, suspension systems, transmissions, etc.) is desired.

 

Responsibilities include:

 

  • Analyze heat generation of motors and power electronics and design and/or specify cooling systems to optimize the functionality of these components
  • Perform Thermal, Shock, Vibration, Fatigue, and Noise analyses for linear and nonlinear materials, assemblies, and interfaces for rotating mechanisms and structural components 
  • Design, analysis and test of electric and hybrid-electric propulsion and energy storage systems
  • Conduct detailed finite element analysis of complex components and assemblies for multiple applications
  • Prepare internal standards, specifications, analysis procedures, and test procedures
  • Develop and evaluate design alternatives for continuous product improvement
  • Work with Mechanical, Control and Electromagnetic Engineers
  • Assist with CAD modeling, part design and manufacture, prototype builds, and vehicle integration as required

Power Electronics Engineer

This position will be responsible for the design, development, and validation of power electronic devices up to 5kW including high voltage charging systems, DC/DC power conversion, and DC to AC power conversion.  For this position, BluWav is looking for an electrical engineer that has experience with designing, simulating, and building power conversion devices.  You will work with a team of highly skilled engineers and assist BluWav Systems with their continued growth.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Develop ground up power electronics and energy conversion devices.
  • Simulate and test designs utilizing PC software to prove that the design will meet the system objectives.
  • Create schematics in OrCAD and develop system level BOM’s for the designs.
  • Assist in component sourcing and selection.
  • Develop FMEA on designs and concepts to provide more reliable designs.
  • Work with suppliers to arrange electrical testing, EMC/EMI testing, and environmental testing.
  • Experience with DSP’s or microcontrollers used to control power electronics systems, and with the software required to operate them (auto code, or C/C++)
  • Experience with debugging microcontroller software and associated tool chain.
  • Perform module level testing and confirm the module operates to required specification
  • Assist with gathering customer technical requirements
  • Perform in vehicle testing and assist with vehicle assembly

Sr. Electromagnetic Engineer

The main responsibilities for this position include the design and development of electric motor drives and their applications.  Will be required to model (both analytical and numerical) and simulate electromagnetic and mechanical components and systems by performing the following duties.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Researches and analyzes data such as customer design proposal, specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application.
  • Magnetic and Electromagnetic Design, Magnetic Circuit Design using hard (permanent) and soft magnetic materials.
  • 2D and 3D Finite Element modeling and analysis of characteristics of magnetic materials, various design & analysis techniques of electric motors.
  • Develop fast and accurate design and analysis programs.
  • Analyze and recommend cooling requirements.
  • Investigate the trade-offs between various motor topologies and recommend solutions most suitable for applications.  Options include inverted vs. non-inverted, ac-induction vs BDLC vs axial flux vs switched reluctance machines.  
  • Analysis and modeling of specific transportation applications for various electric motors.
  • Create and develop new motor design improvements for increased efficiency, reduced weight and package, lower cost, etc.
  • Plans and directs engineering personnel in fabrication of test control apparatus and equipment, and development of methods and procedures for testing products or systems.
  • Directs and coordinates fabrication and installation activities to ensure products and systems conform to engineering design and customer specifications.
  • Coordinates operation, maintenance, and repair activities to obtain optimum utilization of machines and equipment.

Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering and minimum of 3 years experience in motor design
  • Experience with Automotive suspension, power train and thermal design.   Related fields may include sensor and instrument design, electrical and electronic design, instrumentation and related R&D fields, computer model simulations and evaluations, finite element analysis, laboratory experimentation and testing, and production/manufacturing experience.

Sr. Vehicle Dynamics Engineer

BluWāv is seeking a senior vehicle dynamics engineer to develop and integrate algorithms for vehicles equipped with multiple motor electric drive systems.

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead instrumentation and data acquisition integration of test vehicles
  • Support vehicle level modeling and simulation
  • Lead expert evaluation and objective measurement of multi-motor electric drive systems.
  • Drive and acquire test data on varied surfaces and driving conditions
  • Organize and interpret data to set functional vehicle targets. 
  • Lead the development of vehicle dynamic attribute targets
  • Develop and communicate technical reports resulting from vehicle testing
  • Develop and integrate algorithms that optimize vehicle acceleration, braking, and ride stability of the vehicle.

Product Manager - Marine Systems

BluWāv is seeking a product manager to lead all aspects of internal engineering and external customer relations for our marine electric drive applications.

Responsibilities include:

  • Build marine propulsion business in support of revenue and profitability objectives
  • Direct customer interface for all commercial and technical requirements
  • Develop and maintain full system BOM, cost targets, and profitability models
  • Report on product progress and profitability to General Manager
  • Interface with engineering to ensure customer and internal technical requirements are integrated into customer deliverables
  • Interface with testing activities to ensure product reliability and exceed warranty objectives
  • Suggest diagnostic methods, algorithms, and tools to be made available to customers for service upgrades and repair

Senior Electronics Hardware Design Engineer

BluWāv is seeking an electronics hardware design engineer to lead the design, development, and fabrication of low voltage mixed digital and analog circuitry for our overall electric propulsion system inverter technology.

Responsibilities include:

  • Design, development, and implementation of automotive grade electronics hardware consisting of mixed small signal digital and analog circuits and integration of DSP and other microcontrollers.
  • Conversion of customer requirements and system requirement documentation into electronic hardware implementations.

BluWāv is seeking a senior reliability engineer to lead the development, implementation, and reporting of design validation tests and procedures for existing and future electric drive components and system products

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead the development of component and system design validation tests, procedures, and sequences
  • Determine internal or external test capabilities and develop quotations for vendor testing
  • Implement, monitor, and report on test results from internal and external test facilities

Sensor and Actuator Engineer

BluWāv is seeking an engineer to lead the mechanical, electrical, and electronic integration of advanced sensors into existing and future product lines.

Responsibilities include:

  • Define sensor and actuator requirements for motor and vehicle control systems and components such as:
    • Motor position sensors (resolvers, encoders, etc.)
    • Parking pawl actuators
    • Accelerometers
    • Yaw rate sensors

Power Electronics Engineer - Hybrid and Electric Drives

BluWāv is seeking a Power Electronics Engineer for the development of HEV and EV Drives and related components. This position will be responsible for delivering high power buck/boost electronics and controls.  This is a hands-on position that requires a great amount of customer and peer interaction.

Responsibilities include:

  • Design, development, and customer implementation of core high power air or liquid-cooled electronics including:
    • BLDC (IPMSM) Motor/Generator drives (25 – 160 kW)
    • DC to DC converters (2-5 kW, 320Vdc+ to 28 or 14v)
    • Bi-Directional Buck Boost Converters (40kW+)

    • Centralized data capture and storage for multiple data acquisition sources and networks
    • All GPIB, RS232, CAN, Ethernet and other networked test equipment connected to National Instruments test hardware
